Akshardham Temple is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi. It is also referred as as Delhi Akshardham or Swaminarayan Akshardham. The temple complex is a splendid example of centuries of traditional Hindu culture, spirituality and architecture. The architecture of the temple complex is based on Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The temple is a vision of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha.
The temple was officially opened to visitors on 6th November 2005. The temple has been acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple. It took five years to build the temple and involved over 11,000 artisans and volunteers. The temple measures 356 ft long, 316 ft wide and 141 high and covering an area of 86,342 sq ft. The temple is constructed from Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble. The temple has more then 20,000 statues of various religious heads and devotees and also has 148 scaled down elephant statues.
The Akshardham Temple complex consists of large central monument crafted entirely of stone, Hall of values, an IMAX feature, a musical fountain, and large landscaped gardens.
The Hall of Values or Sahajanand Pradarshan features life-like robotics and three-dimensional full-size models displaying incidents from the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan's and give out his message about the importance of peace, harmony, humility, service to others and devotion to God. The hall also features the world's smallest animatronics robot in the form of Ghanshyam Maharaj, the child form of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
The Theater or Nilkanth Kalyan Yatra is Delhi's first and only large format screen measuring 85-foot by 65-foot. The movie Nilkanth Yatra is screened especially for the visitors. The move gives an account of the 7 year pilgrimage made by Bhagwan Swaminarayan made during his teenage years throughout India.
The fountain or the Yagnapurush Kund is the largest step well in India. Every night a musical fountain show representing the circle of life is played to an audience
The boat ride named Sanskruti Vihar takes visitors on a journey showcasing 10,000 years of Indian history and lasts 2 minutes. Peacock shaped boats take visitors on a ride over the artificial river, passing through a scale down model of Takshashila, the world's first university, chemistry laboratories, ancient hospitals, and bazaars. The boat ride ends with a message expressing hope for the future of India.
Garden of India also known as Bharat Upavan has well maintained lawns, trees, and shrubs. The garden also has bronze sculptures depicting India's culture and history. These sculptures include children, women, national figures, freedom fighters, and warriors of India.
Apart from the above mentioned there are many other features in the temple like The Narayan Sarovar is a lake that surrounds the main monument. Premvati Food Court is a vegetarian restaurant modeled on the Ajanta and Ellora caves. The Akshardham Centre for Applied Research in Social Harmony is a centre within the complex that pramotes research of social harmony and related topics. Studies are also conducted on education, medicare, tribal and rural welfare, ecology, and culture are also conducted at the centre.
